The medieval shire-reefe was similar (and, I am not extraordinarily well read on this topic, so I could be mistaken) but more of a position appointed to a local by the crown. If I remember correctly, Magistrate eventually replaced the word Sheriff in the middle ages and is a more accurate description of the office. So, closer to a judge/administrator than an officer?
