The problem is that there are tons of stories like that. As in, I could literally find you hundreds, maybe thousands. Enough personal accounts eventually make a trend. And that's just talking about them getting kicked out of their homes. Nevermind that there are the occasional beatings of them to death, the constant bullying in schools that teachers either don't do anything about or actively take part in, the laws trying to be passed that make it okay to deny them service or a job purely because of it; the list goes on. There's, or at least was, a fucking law, though I don't remember if it was only proposed or actually passed, I think it had passed, that made it so police and firemen can deny helping homosexuals due to their religious beliefs. If you genuinely don't think that homosexuals are oppressed in this country then you clearly base your own worldview purely on where you personally live. 
And even still, that doesn't count the islamic and christian countries where they can be put to death for it, or are beaten and lynched pretty much weekly if not daily, or fucking russia where they're on the verge of getting to that point.
