A normal person would note a slap often aids in allowing someone to regain control of themselves-which is to say it restores clarity. Something the good professor was in dire need of, if his words were any indication. A normal person would also hesitate to slap a man so clearly in dire straits. A normal person would seek alternatives, perhaps note the surprise of the gesture was often the factor-rather then the pain. What a normal person would not do is take that fact, and conclude grabbing someone by the shirt and kissing them full on the lips was a fitting substitute.
