Like the rest of his abilities, it'd be accidental. Maybe a sort of physical reaction, like the way his hair moves. The way it floats unnaturally is a result of his ability, so maybe it reacts towards energy manipulators. Like flowing in the opposite direction of the user in response. So he'd be able to use it as a sort of compass rather than a direct point to point sensory system.

Edit: Even better, characters who absolutely swamp him in ability would cause his hair to no longer float. So a character in ultra-high or god tier would make his hair hang like natural hair.
