Teaser: They're a sentient species unable to control their empathy or comprehend aggression in others. Every act of anger or predation that they see makes them feel really sad and confused over why their friends would hurt one another like this. However, they're too stupid to understand the implications of where meat comes from, or what the purpose is of the weapons they build.

Also, their flesh contains an extremely powerful narcotic. Harvesting them to sell or sate one's own addiction is not only profitable but also gives one an edge over one's enemies due to the positive effects of the drug. They don't understand the idea that they're being raised for slaughter either.
