Here is the alternate character I proposed in my PM yesterday. Hopefully he works, but I'm open to re-tooling him as necessary. And definitely let me know if you'd prefer I proceed in a different direction! :sun ---
Basic Information Name: Rennet Haru Kyne Age: 35 Sex: Male Theme Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N21t5DTmlw Appearance Under normal circumstances Rennet is not a man most would remember; he dresses plainly and usually without much regard for the fashions of the day. He grooms only as much as he must; he nearly always sports a healthy degree of stubble and a head of close-cropped red hair to reduce the effort required to maintain his appearance. Dark circles undercut his eyes and there is a gauntness to him that speaks of other sorts of neglect (or reckless addiction), but where most in his position would have a pale pallor he is tanned and otherwise has the appearance of good health. Blue eyes the color of midwinter ice are set below thick brows, and seem to never cease drinking in the sights around him. Beneath the outwards signs of self-disregard are a different set of truths. He is extremely well-built, lithe but firmly muscular. He bears a vast array of scars and poorly-healed wounds across most of his body, including a rather distinctive scar over his heart that suggests a brutal attempt on his life that didn't quite succeed. Rennet carries himself with lethal grace despite the languidity of his movement and is never far from a weapon if he can help it, though it may not always be obvious where that weapon hides. When able, he goes about fully armed with a set of blasters on his belt and slung across his back. He also possesses a set of segmented body armor fashioned by those who knew their craft and could afford to charge handsomely for it – dark green plates and a darker pressure suit to match, with a helm and hoses to ensure he could survive in the void of space if things take a serious turn for the worse. He wears it rarely, though, and prefers to be unencumbered when able. History Rennet's youth was unremarkable. No history of abuse, no tragic inciting events, nor any grand quests of revenge motivated him or set him upon his path. He grew up in a family of moderate means not far from the surface of Coruscant and lived the life of one in the shadow of the grander world, unable to afford the kind of lifestyle he saw in the holovids but generally indifferent to his lack of means. He showed little interest in most things that children cared about, save perhaps the sports played amidst the alleyways and wider plazas below the dazzling lights of the upper city. The moment he was of age he enlisted in the Republic's armed forces and was promptly dispatched to quell an uprising on a distant world not long after passing through boot camp. A peaceful resolution to the civil strife proved impossible and Rennet soon found himself in armed conflict with citizens of the government he'd taken an oath to protect … and found that not only did it not bother him, he actually rather enjoyed the fight. Each passing year brought him more and more assignments to dangerous places. Lacking any sort of compunction, he proved himself well-suited to the kind of worlds that most soldiers hope never to go, and it made him stronger. He learned much of his craft in those years, and was inducted into a different sort of role when his aptitude became obvious to his superiors. The Galactic Republic Special Forces helped to hone his skills even further and provided him with a number of opportunities to work with the sorts of individuals that citizens of the Republic were better of never knowing. More time passed, and by his tenth year of service he figured it was time to move on and made his way free of the people who owned him. Going into business for himself was one of the best decisions he'd ever made. The work was slow at first – odd mercenary jobs, smuggling, and protection rackets mostly – but soon blossomed into a much more lucrative trade when word got around of his efficiency and his willingness to do most anything; as an independent contractor his resume expanded to include everything from personal “requests” to freelance work for the GRSF, and even for those he once called enemies. Presently Rennet is wrapping up a contract in the heat-soaked grasslands of Cathar. He plans to be on his way as swiftly as able, but plans often have a way of going awry. Especially now that the galaxy is about to be dragged into a war the likes of which it has never known... Personality In that same vein, the prospect of galactic war is an exciting one to a man like Rennet. He finds himself easily bored and in need of distraction when not actively working a contract or being shot at, and that does tend to take a toll on him. He's fairly easy-going, however, and usually very open to new experiences where he finds them. In life, he's found that no culture in the galaxy has a monopoly on wisdom or on the perfect way to live … so why not try a little of everything and incorporate the elements which work? That easiness and open-mindedness often give others the impression that he's warm and friendly, however, and that's something of a mistaken impression; while he's quite capable of playing the part when necessary, his default mode of conduct is one of internal reaction and rational response, and he usually doesn't empathize with anyone but himself unless prompted to try. It makes him a good soldier and an excellent assassin, but rather impotent in the arena of romance or friendship … though his inclination towards the latter pair is spotty at best. Likes: Guns, music, travel, new experiences, freedom of movement. Dislikes: Formality, social events, popular culture, obligation. Skills / Abilities Rennet has trained in most of the standard weapons of the galaxy and many which are significantly less common. He's an excellent marksman and is proficient at close-range combat as well, though is much less comfortable as a pilot or when forced to participate in squad-based tactics. His abilities with a blade are nothing to scoff at but he'd be hard-pressed to compete with anyone who had trained extensively in the use of swords – especially those able to wield the Force as well. Strengths: Rationality and quick-thinking, leading to clever tactics that some might struggle to keep up with. He is fast and mobile and rarely takes the time to slow himself to the pace of others. Has no illusions as to his lack of heroism and will not hesitate to do what must be done. Weaknesses: Drink and stronger intoxicants. Vices which might not tempt a nobler or more conscientious man are a weakness for Rennet, though rare is the occasion when it actively interferes with a job. He also lacks empathy, which can sometimes hurt him in situations where diplomacy might overcome a misunderstanding.
