I'd imagine that the bow would be seen as a cowardly weapon in certain areas, seeing as most anyone that weren't the English during the medieval era saw bows to be a cowardly weapon such as the Germans and the Franks. 

However, I think that at the very least Maria could take you as apprentices. Until you are able to hold your own anyway.
