They were a common way of carrying electronic cash around without an account.  "Each one has ten credits on it.  It should be enough for a few small things, but don't buy too much."

When he started to eat my father, though, a bone got hung in his throat and he died.  They couldn't recusitate him.
I have no doubt that you can see what will happen, but I don't think you can know enough to know how it will happen with certainty.  As one of your fictional characters said, always in motion, the future is.  I'll bribe my way in and plant the device.  You'll need to make sure that it's destroyed or gone before we leave, though.
