it only goes from mother to child the moment there are no females left to lead the group. If there are the strongers one of them all will leade the herd. but most herds have one or two females ( in kelpie lore, female kelpies are rare to come by) 

but lets not dive to deep into the details. its fiction after all, and we are here to have fun ^^
