They got about halfway up the stairs when they heard a loud smashing sound that came from the far end of the upstairs area, in the direction of the basement.
It sounded like wood being smashed apart.

Following that sound was a pair of high pitched screams followed by several loud [i]Pop[/i]'s, the sound of pistols firing.
Followed by a familiar sounding roar of anger.
