The anime has always been kind of a cross between slice-of-life and monster-of-the-week, interspersed with plot episodes. Plus, it's still a show that is targeted towards young children, not teens or adults. Remember, Pokemon is the one where Ash has somehow managed to travel through six entire countries on foot, and still be ten-years-old. 

Which was itself a retcon.
