What I mean to say is an animated appearance is probably better as most will be choosing a different race than human. It's just easier to imply what your character looks like when they're, say, a dwarf or a nymph when it's an animated image. 

If you can find a realistic image of someone with a really good portrayal of the race you're going for, use it. :) Or if you just want to be a human and you like realistic images better. Do that.
