The only explanation I can think of is that getting transported to this world infused us with the knowledge of their spoken language, but not how to read it. Once Tani mentioned that they could use the help of an artist, Eris thought that, if she could help the knights, maybe it would be easier for her to find a non dangerous living on this world.
