She was born on Andoria, and spent much of her life there, always considering it her homeworld even after her family left it for Earth. Her father had been a member of the Andorian Imperial Guard, and was a well-respected warrior. He often travelled with delegates to Earth, leaving his family behind on Andoria. When Avillaa was 12 years old, her father died while protecting one of the delegates. He had gone down fighting. His body not being able to be brought back, his blood was left at the Wall of Heroes on Andoria, while Avillaa and her mother watched.

After her father’s death, Avillaa spent much of her time fighting, practicing to become a warrior like her father had been. Unfortunately, while practicing her fighting in a friendly bout, her opponent hit her hard in the stomach. This sent her flying backwards into a wall, breaking her back. She spent a year recovering, and decided that she didn’t want to be a warrior. Her mother thought that art might interest her, but it didn’t. She loved science and when she was almost 17 years old, her mother sent her to Earth to join Starfleet.

She excelled at the studies, and graduated almost at the top of the class. She felt so lucky, to have been given the chance of going on one of the newest ships in Starfleet.
