Al was born on Earth his parents Trill Diplomats assigned to the Federation.

He spent his first 8 years growing up in San Francisco till his parents were reassigned to the homeworld.

Once back on Trill Al's unique early history fascinated the Guardians who sought to test him for eventual joining with a symbiote as those creatures were themselves curious about humanity. He proved to be of keen interest to the already joined Wasen Symbiote who was pivotal in Al's acceptance as a future host.

Given a strong education and monitored both physically psychologically as were all candidates and scored slightly above average and should have been relegated to a position of lower status but again Wasen stepped in and insisted that only Al would be acceptable to her.

If things had developed as they usually did among Trill Al would have been placed as a candidate at age 22-28 but fate had a different plan. Kineer Wasen had taken Al with her on a diplomatic mission and the mission was attacked injuring Kineer and forcing an early joining with him at age 17.

It was touch and go at first but eventually the two merged though with a mild degree of confusion. Then finishing his training on Trill Alzeri Wasen made known their plan to become the first joined Trill to ever attend Star Fleet Academy

He did well and graduated 49th in his class an was assigned to the USS Victory as a Tactical officer.

He displayed a quick grasp of ship's tactics and twice was responsible for his ship's survival when the bridge staff were unable due to casualties to continue at their posts.

His display of initiative was why he was sent to the advanced tactical school on Andoria.
