Hm, the intimate understanding bit would tie into how language seeks to convey meaning. You can't really convey what something means through your own words if you don't actually understand how it works. It's sorta like ... explaining to reality what you want, isn't it? So he'd also need to be pretty specific on what he wants done, and if he screws that up, it won't work. And I'm fine with limiting his range to just himself and inanimate objects for now.
