Since leaving the Republic military in the formal sense and becoming a ward of a Jedi Knight, he's gone and grown his hair and beard.
Skills/Abilities:
- Mandalorian Warrior Training - It starts at age 8, making them eerily similar to Jedi in some ways. Topics covered include physical conditioning, weapons handling. There are a lot of less-skilled warriors coming out of rally camps in Mando space, recruiting quickly from captured populations -- they get given the Resol'nare, a suit of armor and *poof* are Mandos. Besk is the old school, and a nasty surprise for people that think it's just the armor that makes a Mando. - Republic Technician Training - As a military technician, Besk learned quite a bit about Republic equipment and systems. He's merged that with his Mando upbringing. Topics covered include commo tech, slicing, droid programmming and maintenance as well as structural repair and metal cutting/fabrication. - Extra-vehicular operations/Zero-G. - Mando'a, Huttese and Twi'lek languages. - Special knowledge of Mandalorian Crusader and Neo-Crusader tactics and operational procedure. - He doesn't claim to be the best, but he can pilot things. That includes Bes'uliik War-Droids.
Equipment: Typical equipment, may bring different 'kit' to the fight depending on the mission requirements and his own best judgment
- Armor, painted dark brown-olive with dark red. Using access to Knight Sunrider's 'credit card' with Republic supply and technical assistance, as well as battlefield salvaged Mandalorian Neo-Crusader Shock-Trooper Armor materials, he was able to assemble a good set of beskar'gam. - Systems: + Automatic compression + oxygen supply + magnetized knee-pads and boots. + gripper gloves + Datapad and holo unit + Integrated HUD and aim-assistance, networked with his weaponry and targeting sensor remotes (2). + HUD module for expanded field of vision; networked to cameras mounted on armor. + Encrypt/decrypt comm unit. + Wrist-mounted vibroblade. - Mandalorian Assault Blaster with extensive modifications. - OP-12 blaster pistol w/ quick release holster - Mandalorian Ripper - highly illegal, devastating at close range. - Czerka M-1 Grenade Launcher - break-action, single shot, folding stock; very simple technology, highly compact but accurate platform. - 2 Remotes, repulsorlift powered. They are directed by the armor's onboard computer but have limited programming to take evasive action if engaged with fire. Otherwise, they provide target data back to Besk's armor. - Cortiosis-weave fighting knife with a silk-rope grip - Utility/survival belt w/ bells and whistles multi-tool - Field medical kit with painkillers, bandages, a tourniquet kit, surgical scissors and pliers and other sterile tools as needed -- the typical infantry emergency supply for battlefield casualty first aid. - Mesh Tape - Binder Cuffs - Synthrope - Jet Pack. Czerka model of some sort. - Asai Emerald stud earring, memento of his sister (Mandalorians tend to wear token belongings of beloved dead relatives as a ritual remembrance) - Optional equipment includes; rotary-magazine grenade launcher, ion weapons, disruptors, sniping blaster rifles, vibroswords, mines and grenades, rocket launchers, repeating blasters, some of them with repulsorlift assistance to handle. Grenades, mines, thermal dets and various trigger mechanisms, including command detonation.
Personality:
Besk is a fair example of an old-school Mandalorian; he is independent-minded and does not do the whole compromise thing well. He also doesn't often deign to get involved in arguments, though he also has no problems with using what he knows to his advantage if someone tries to get in his way. He is resourceful and self-confident in his own judgment decisions, which can make him a handful to someone that is indecisive. He doesn't wrestle with morality, things are fairly simple for him in that he is able to select a priority and stick with it. Of course, that isn't unique to Mandalorian culture where a pragmatic streak runs a mile wide. Given his druthers, he'd prefer Mandalorians stick to running their sector of space; that isolationism is bred of this war as well as digging into the last war and realizing that the Mandos were manipulated.
History:
Besk Mereel was one of the early Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders fighting under Cassus Fett in the initial phases of the war in the Outer Rim, when the Mandos first mobilized and the Neos, using discipline and organization in addition to fighting spirit, were able to make significant gains over that of the old Crusader types. Besk came from a traditional clan of Taung and Humans and, despite the disapproval of others in the family, signed on with the Neo's new methods which were born of defeat in the last war when Mandalore the Indomitable signed on with Ulic Qel-Droma. Young, aggressive and trained from a young age in the traditional mold, he distinguished himself in the early fights as a stalwart and was marked for things in the upcoming war. Based on his skills, he was assigned to a shock trooper formation and, eventually, given leadership responsibilities. On Cathar, he led a strike team to take the first communication relays and orbital facilities to pave the way for the follow-on invasion, using his knowledge of computer systems to help pave the way. While that played out in space, the bulk of the force, including his older sister, were on the ground mopping up Cathar. That, of course, was when Cassus Fett's forces ordered the Cathar slaughtered when he had them up against the ocean. Kesa Mereel objected and died with the Cathar. Besk, up in one of the stations, was also slated to be killed by Fett, who realized that Besk Mereel was unlikely to take this one sitting down. Despite this, he was given warning by one of his other comrades and quickly turned the tables in a tough one-on-many fight in the Cathar relay station, a fight that ended when he found a ship and used it to escape. He ducked out of sight for a couple years, but came to the fore again when the Mandalorian onslaught truly began against the Republic, enlisting under the nom de guerre Jalork Canna. The Republic, asking few questions during the desperate times of Serocco and other battles, quickly promoted Canna to an NCO role on the basis of his skills. When asked where he picked them up, he said, 'bounty hunting' and that was apparently true, as there was a licensed bounty hunter by that name operating in Hutt Space. He was a killer at a time when the Republic was in short supply of good fighters and asked few questions when fringe scum signed on to help fight. He avoided being recruited into IRSOG's, knowing that the Republic's counterintelligence corps would vet him and come out with the real story, but served in the 121st Galactic Marine regiment on Myrkr. Republic forces suffered 2,000 casualties overnight, including the company commander, and leadership fell to a staff captain named Tyrus Alde, who was the son of an influential Alderaanian senator. The man gave orders that did not sit well with Besk and he engineered the man's death, 'advised' a young lieutenant on what the next moves were on the basis of his knowledge of Mando'a and Neo-Crusader battle codes. The company was able to hold out in the fight and cover the retreat from Myrkr, but Besk was outed. Half the company considered him a hero no matter what and the other half were all too happy to report him. Counterintelligence swooped in, grabbed battlefield loot from the company (including a set of armor to study) and promptly detained Besk. There was a great degree of pressure to sanitize the record of the Senator's son to reflect that he was heroically killed saving his men in a gallant fight and some dirty Mandalorian killed him. Around this time, renegade Jedi Knight Sula Sunrider was made aware of the situation, investigated and used her considerable influence as one of the few Jedi fighting against the Mandalorians at the time to get Besk out of the stockade. It relieved command of a thorny issue -- how to execute a decorated hero of the Republic as an enemy spy and somehow not look bad in the process. They were perfectly happy to let the Jedi take the blame since they were so unpopular anyway. On the basis of her authority (which they accepted, even though it was bending the rules) as a Jedi on legal matters, they cut him loose to her. As it happened, Knight Sunrider was assigned to IRSOG-37 around the time that Revanchists finally were able to get their ranks into the war as well.
Relationships
Well, Sula Sunrider is the one that got him out of the pokey. He's pretty much there because she sees use in a Mandalorian defector, especially since IRSOG-37 is going to be spearheading the fleet's operations. Otherwise, he's probably not the most popular guy.
