That's the kind of imagery i was thinking of [@Footman].

On the actual workings of the weapon i guess i've mentioned that it's techno-arcana, so to clarify.
A wizard did it, with magic. Also steampunk.
It still probably needs focus lenses and all that jazz, but it's a magical device and not a proper laser.

And his armour isn't that much more awesome than regular plate armour. Perhaps a bit thicker.
The primary thing is that it is all encompassing, like the tournament armours of Henry VIII.
