Alex was actually conflicted about following the orders Kirin was giving out. One hand it was the smart play and there was strength in numbers. On the other hand Alex hated deserting a friend in their time of need. 

Then one overriding thought entered his mind...his father told him to stay safe and this was actually the safest play under the circumstances.

Alex bolted towards Katy and Maia and said, "Let's see if we can think of something to help Kirin. He ain't gonna last long against that."
