Petaburg is the only other major city of the south, functioning as the major Residential City for commuters to Rustboro. Oldale, an outlying suburb, is a common place for advanced Pokemon trainers to practice battling in the shadow of prestigious Johnson Academy. The furthest suburb is Littleroot, a small village where Professor Fir's research laboratory and a few outlying houses establish a warm and intimate community. Oldale connects by river and land to the southern end of the Cycling Road and Route 110. The southern half of Route 104 is the site of Briney Marina and its beaches, and ends at Petalburg Woods, a dense outcrop of forest just northwest of Petalburg proper. Though still overgrown, it is the best path to travel from Petalburg to Rustboro. The Gym Leader, Violet, surveys the area and makes travel much easier. Much of this area is dominated by the Petildale Forest, surrounding the cities, suburbs, and towns and all associated Routes. Northwest of Mauville is dominated by Mt. Chimney, and all of the geographical features stemming from it. Much of the island of Dewford is overgrown and dense with tropical vegetation. The Dewford Forest surrounds Granite Cave and the Town of Dewford, which is almost a town, with the overgrowth and wild Pokemon seeming to push them ever closer to the shore. Mauville Island, the island just east of Route 110 and just south of Route 118, has been the center of some contention with the residents of Mauville. Fishers, treasure hunters, and athletes make their homes here, however temporary, making the possibility of losing one's path unlikely. The most notable island in this archipelago is the City of Mossdeep with it's highly-advanced space technology and laboratories. Still, the archipelago has it's areas of danger, most notably the village of Ever Grande and the suburb of Sootopolis. Though Sootopolis isn't inherently a dangerous place to live, the methods of entering it's crater allow only the most skillful of trainers or bravest of divers. Shoal Cave and Victory Road are only more dangerous. The ebb and flow of the natural tides can quickly trap the unsuspecting (and unprepared) explorers and adventurers in the depths of Shoal Cave. Victory Road is full of dangerous Pokemon and treacherous trainers (specifically the Elite Four). Regardless, the environment here is very natural and relatively undeveloped, lending it a mysterious air. The great crater of Sootopolis and the dangers of Victory Road are whispered about on the mainland, but rarely visited and only seen from afar.
