The law was changed in 1972 to eliminate the justification. Nevertheless, under common law a killing committed "in the heat of passion" may not have the element of malice aforethought necessary to be murder. Such killings are generally prosecuted as manslaughter.

By the way, the current state of the law in Texas is pretty common, and represents the current law in most states."
