SUMMER OF 1918 The Central Powers are losing. Since their pinnacle at the Russian Revolution in 1917, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire have declined steadily. Desperate offensives to obtain favorable positions before the arrival of American forces have been rebuffed with heavy casualties. Ottoman Sinai and Palestine are close to fallen. An Allied buildup in the Balkans strikes fear into a war wary Bulgaria. The Imperial Intelligence Service at Vienna intercepts a disturbing development; a potent gas formula has entered Allied field trial. Predictions indicate this chemical will dwarf the carnage of all concurrent gasses. One shipment is bound for Rome; the Italians must not lay their hands on it, lest the stalemate on the Alps and the Adriatic coasts be turned in the enemies' favor. It is a delicate situation unsuited for soldiers, but rather, agents.
