Ah so technically speaking, the gene could kick in really anytime between the age limit. Or never at all for that matter. Maybe people with this gene such also have worse nightmares? Once the gene kicks in I mean. 

That could work, of course if they did that it would be more dangerous wouldn't? Like the whole issue is that if you lost control it will actually kill you. So if you fell asleep, would you lose control?
