I see. I don't think there are any problems, but he seems lacking. His only actual magecraft is his alchemy and his fighting stile of choice can't be used for long as you described it. His Thought Acceleration and Memory Partition are very useful though, so maybe these abilities can give him a good enough advantage over his enemies. In any case, if you want to buff him a little then don't be afraid to do it.
