[@KoL]: Aaaaaactually, every single description I have read seems fairly clear that Servants are the [i]only time[/i] you actually get the full ego and it's the other times(counter guardians and stuff, aside from EMIYA probably) that it's just copies.

Because third magic and all, even in emulation.
