I mean, many instances of the same phenomenon (7*8 being weird) doesn't imply a specific explanation. It just implies that the actual explanation probably explains them all. One ad hoc explanation will explain them all just as well as another ad hoc explanation.
EDIT: Unless you're talking about several similar phenomena.
