Never underestimate the power of stupidity. Especially since it was those kinds of space scientists who created Baby and Super 17 and... well those didn't work out very well for them.

*sigh* Seems I'm only the one with the stones to include weeks/months of nonstop torture in my backstory. I mean we're working for the bad guys here so I'm pretty sure it's okay to get a little extra dark in the writing. *shrug*
