Nicolas seems outgoing, friendly, and trusting. Exactly the sort of person you'd want to know, even if he seems a little too focuses on tomorrow rather than today. On a few occasions he has done some "immoral" things to get back at people, though more often for his friends than himself. While this would not necessarily be obvious, ask anyone about him and that'd be one of the first things they'd say. He can seem egocentric despite his extroverted outlook, but this is an unintentional side-effect of being a little too ambitious.[/indent]

Nicolas' outlook and charisma have meant he's never been short of "friends", but people he genuinely trusts are rarer and much more valuable to him. This was the cause of his vindictiveness, but he realised quickly that just because he trusts some people more than others does not mean that those he trusts less do not trust him. He has a constant, secret fear of letting people down, and the way he acts is his way of preventing that from ever happening. Around those he trusts most Nicolas seems more relaxed, as if the rest of his life is a stage and he's glad to be done acting, for now at least. Of course for Nicolas, that actually is the case.[/indent]

[indent]The Chen family has been around longer than most in Westworth, despite the fact that most families have been around a while. The Chinese-American family sees itself and is seen as a vital part of the town, and the fact that Nicolas is a direct male-line descendant of Edward Chen, who traveled to America during its initial colonization, does not make his plans to leave any easier. Perhaps it was an omen he was born so close to the turn of the millennium - for generations leaving had never even been considered by the Chens. He grew up with the weight of his desires a constant secret. His parents, Lucas and Jennifer Chen, and his older sister, Alicia Chen, had no ideal, although Alicia's plans were remarkably similar.
When he started at the high school he already had a good idea what it'd be like - a combination of his constant secret-keeping and his sister's warnings had made sure he was ready for that. He joined the basketball team in his second year, became captain in his third, but nothing really changed.[/indent]
