[@Azure Sea] I said that his master had died during his second year of beacon (aka the first year for Team RWBY, the same year that everything between Seasons 1-3 happened) and he travelled back to his village for the Vytal Festival (because classes are cancelled for the tournaments). From what I can tell, not all the teams were in the tournament so it's not hard to guess that Team VRDT weren't part of the tournament and he got permission to go.
