[@Saltwater Thief]Sometimes the GM doesn't give you an alternative because it would be a waste of time. Meaning, nothing will come of it IC and it doesn't lead to the characters or their Pokemon gaining any experience. At least for that situation. That situation was just to rile up suspicion. It's also serving another in-game plot purpose.

I'll be getting a GM post up soon. It'll more than likely be after I relax from such a busy week.
