Zombies: not really.

Mutants: definitely. They will be "loosely inspired by" the real-deal mutants which live in the Zone of Alienation, and which crawled out of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In other words they won't be totally realistic, but I will attempt to make them [i]feel[/i] realistic. So even though 99% of mutants are sterile in the real world, for example, my mutants will have become actual species, but ones which are still as horrible and grotesque as those which dwell in our world.

People that are just surviving: in abundance, and for all their own unique reasons. Some are fugitives escaping the law, others are entrepreneurs who see opportunity and beauty amidst the death and suffering of the Zone, and others still are clock-punchers "just doing their jobs" (like the soldiers trying to maintain quarantine under government orders).
