[b]Description:[/b] Colonized by the Netherlands in 1662 as part of the Dutch West Indies, the Asante People's Republic (then called Asanasfeer), gained independence in 1952. Asanasfeer was a democracy. However, there were allegations of corruption and nepotism within the system and in 1954, with the aid of Latin American revolutionaries and speculated aid from the USSR, the government was overthrown in a socialist uprising and a communist government was put in its place. Premier Rihairo Martina has been First Secretary of the Asante Communist Party and leader of the newly renamed Asante People's Republic ever since. [b]Government:[/b] Communist.
