If they want to reflect a region, native American terms might work. "Potawatomi" could be used, a tribal group originating from Michigan. After reading up on all the choices though, I have to say that if I were in your position, I'd probably use some variation of "Gitche-Gumee". It's a Native American term for Lake Superior, the translation meaning "Great Water", which is a pretty good description of the Great Lakes as a whole. Though really, Aaron would be better at picking something out for that region, since he's part of that culture and would know the terms preferred up thataway.
