I'd say go with whichever one you like the most, if you can't choose then maybe choose the gender that would balance out the gender ratio so far. (currently 2 females and 3 guys (1 male character pending)) I'm going to make a female character but also sort of waiting on everyone else to see which gender is lacking to balance it out.
