Helena noticed James's nervous expression when he agreed to come along.  She returned the smile and walked with James towards Cecilia, hoping her presence would give him a bit of confidence.  James seemed to be socially awkward, and that made sense, especially with his background, so Helena wanted to give him as much support as possible, even if it wasn't much.
