They are trying to cram so much world-building into one little segment, it can't help but be confusing.

I mean no disrespect but the whole deites thing kinds sucks. Like some egdy dude decided to scream fuck you and create supermonsters only to work with his brother to create Humans who are constantly wrecked by 'em. 

Then there Salem who can control them or something, or breeds them maybe? I don't know.
