Yeah, it can be a bit hit or miss, to put it kindly. I'd say the trick is to find people who you'd actually want to socialise with, and then introduce them to roleplaying games - one of my friends ended up asking what all the "weird books" were on my bookshelf, I sheepishly explained what we do on with them on a Saturday night, and he wanted to give it a try.

There's always things like Roll20 if you want to go for something that's a bit closer to "traditional" roleplaying games but without the need to actually have to be in the same room as them.
