HOW DID HE EXPECT THAT TO PLAY OUT TO HER? How did you grow up with a non-abusive family like that and not know how to talk to a girl? Mrs. Weasley would have lost her shit at that, I swear. I think Ron's insecurity was huge and that was why he had these serious wtf moments of being an asshole. He's hanging out with the smartest girl in Hogwarts, The Boy Who Lived, and meanwhile he's just the ginger kid with nothing special about him other than being their friends. That's gotta sting somewhere on a subconscious level. However, no excuse to think Hermione was some kind of possession that only he could make use of as he saw fit. Maybe it was in Muggle Studies? LOL since the Wizarding World has kids start their education at like 10 rather than earlier like Muggles, I think J.K. was relying on the parents to do that?
