If we must deal with another barrage of undead, I would rather have a battalion of orcs as back up, if only for the strength in numbers."[/color] The orc forces probably weren't doing so hot after suffering from a terrible case of explosions, but even then, they would be of far more assistance than  being alone alone on the road. The position provided also strategic advantages inherent in the terrain. The cave provided a choke point where one could retreat and focus on a single direction; if the party just up and left and ended up getting attacked again while out in the open, they'd have to worry about attacker coming from any and all directions.
