So, how about this: a situation early on, when Ellis brings the concept to Rayes, desperate to make a new friend, but not as thrilled at the prospect of a non-human friend. Rayes, with his problem with humans, would naturally be reluctant, I think, but secretly excited, and does so at Ravanor's request. This would give the three of them ample time to get familiar, helping Ellis with his distrust of engineers, as well as giving him time to fraternize with non-human species. It would be the opposite for the other two, Rayes potentially making a human ally, and Ravanor possibly bonding with a fellow warrior. In the end, everyone has a chance to get along, and Ravanor has a shot at a massive new weapon.
