Vladimír Zahrádka

Morning rose over the windowless prison block as the familiar buzz then thud that woke the lights blasted it's presence like an irritating alarm clock whose snooze button is just beyond reach. The bright florescent lights flickered for a moment then beamed, illuminating the cells, floors and prisoners, followed by the heavy metallic thuds of the cell guards electronic baton taser running along the cell doors which woke any struggling to wake. The cell guard whistled an irritating tune as he made this stroll rejoicing in the metal clangs and smacks that sounded with each bar brushed against along the line. Vladimir's eyes opened with the first thud of the lights before they showed in yellow light and lay still in his stead, stuck in a sleep paralysis that forced his body in place, a state of nothing when you're mind is conscious but your body has yet to register it's consciousness leaving it in a sleeping state. This lasted moments until the final buzz and lights triggered his bodies awakening. A cold chill ran down the spin of this prisoner. As the cell guard came around to his cell, Vladimir neither looked at him nor acknoledged his existence. His roommate Poval on the other hand stood at the bars and barked at the passerby, resulting in the edge of the baton penetrating the slits in the cell doors and zapping him with the volts of it's taser. Poval yelled and swore from the pain in quick Czech as his knees buckled under the electronic shock leaving him in a still position on the floor of the cell for a moment, his head hitting the bars cemented into the floor that held up his bed. The doors buzzed once, twice then a third time before opening single file for the inmates to be lead towards the cafeteria. This feasting shuffle lead the many male prisoners of cell block C-4 some in hand cuffs others, leg cuffs but mostly free from those types of constrains in this ritual of meal planning. Vladimir waited for a moment before stepping over Poval and finding his place in the line of felons all single file heading down the step stairs towards the open segregated cafeteria. The lights were bright and reflected off the tile floors and metal bars separating the males from the females. Signs hung far overhead reading, Begin here, Trash, End of line, No disorderly behavior will be tolerated, etc. Vladimir followed the feasting shuffle into the line, picking up a tray and receiving food, splattered on in a yellow goo that was barely heated and it's contents unknown. Eggs the sign in front of it read. All around him sounded the cat calls and returning taunts from the males to the females and return. Guards, now so used to this they did not intervene unless something severe seemed as though it was about to take place. With his small container of juice and tray of goo in hand, Vladimir sat on the far end of the cafeteria, near to the only window he had yet to see. The window was perhaps as high as 20 feet up but it's light was welcoming change to him. Though he was unsure if the light was natural or just a florescent projected into the room to give the illusion of daylight where there was none. He pucked up the thin plastic spoon provided to him and began consuming the tasteless yellow gunk that stained the white surface of his eating utensil.
