Have. Known." Ferrin groaned. "The way my week has been-- no, the way my life had been," he complained loudly as he pulled off a boot and upended it, dumping an ocean of water with a fish or two on the rocky earth. "That there would just happen..." He continued as he set that boot aside and did the same with the other, with similar results. "...t-to be..." He pulled off his socks and glove and wrung them out. "a-an ice c-c-c *acho!* cold..." He sniffed, took of his coat, and shook it out, the spelled cloth repelling the water completely. LAKE, right b-below..." He shucked out of his shirt, and wrung it out. His shivering got worse. "The v-very s-s-p-pot I decid-ded to- *acho!*" He sneezed. ...t-tunnel through!" He complained futility and loudly. Ferrin consided pulling off his pants too, but he decided that doing so would be even more demeaning and would only make him colder. Instead, he muttered profanities under his breath, as he focused on casting a gentle heat spell that would warm him without seeting him aflame, which was harder then it sounds. He gritted his teeth to stop them from rattling as he took short breaths and jumped in place a bit to get his blood flowing, as silly as it may have looked, he knew it would help. Just when incinerating himself started to sound like an enticing option, he could feel traces of warmth creep across his cold limbs. His shivering finally stopped. Within a minute, steam rose gently from his body, the water evaporating right off him. He put his shirt back on, the renewed cold a brief shock before it too began to steam. He put on his cold socks and gloves, followed by his boots. He got to his feet, his boots squelched and his feet were immersed in individual puddles of cold. Ferrin sighed. A thought occured to him, and he squished over to to inspect the offending body of water that had the bad grace to catch him. The light from the luminous light-sphere he had cast earlier glittered off of a thin layer of ice. This was unnatural, but Ferrin regarded it without surprise. After all, he knew firsthand how cold it was. He had fallen in the damn thing. I wonder, how could a lake so close to the surface be frozen? Hm, Magic has to have something to do with it. He preformed a thorough search of the area, but he found nothing out of sort, just rocks, frozen fish, and the occasional scuttling bug. He gave up with a shrug and a grunt of "Weird." Under normal circumstances, he would have kept searching until his curiosity had been satisfied but he had a job to do. Investigating frozen water was not high on his priority list. While he searched, Ferrin was able to examine the the dark, wet cavern he found himself in. To his right, he found a tunnel that stretch out into darkness. To his left, the massive, cold lake flowed into the distance; he couldn't see the other shore. Behind and in front, there was only grey stone. Crossing the lake would be far too difficult, but if that is the direction I need to go... With a flick of his fingers, he idly sent the light-sphere zooming over the lake. He watched it fall until it landed, by its light, he caught a glimpse of the far shore. Ferrin was just about to call up another one, but he froze. Oh hell! If I was really that close, the light would give me away, not to mention all the noise I've been making. Think moron! Thus chastised, he decided to examine the tunnel, and if he found nothing, retrace his steps. The entrance, barely a cleft in the rock, got narrower as Ferrin went deeper. He had to stoop, and occasionally crawl to go through. Fortune smiled on him, though as the tunnel lined up with a spoke of the massive magic circle. Soon, he saw a faint, but eeire purple light, far ahead. Either that is black magic, or I'm no wizard." He thought, trying to keep his nerves still. Villains love their strange colors, purple, green, red. All favorites of the type of wizards that put on black hats and call themselves 'dark wizards'. ...dammit, I hope they are all right. And that I am not too late. Ferrin crept closer to the light, and cautiously peered around the edge. The tunnel lead out into a truly massive cavern, the ceiling soared high overhead, out of sight, and enormous stalagmites and stalactites had formed pillars connecting the stony heaven to the ground below. Other tunnels entrances could be seen from Ferrin's hiding place, making him suspect that no matter what tunnel you went through, you would pass through this room. Overall, the place gave off the feeling of being manmade, it was too angular, too perfect. Rusted mine carts and rails confirmed this. The cavern was lit by soly by a massive magic circle, laid with geometric perfection and glowing with dim but adequate purple light. Inside the circle were smaller concentric circles, and running between them were thin lines exactly like, Ferrin realized, the circle laid over the city. The whole thing practically hummed with the amount of gathered magic energy. In the center of all of this, was a strange figure dressed in a slightly ragged black robe with white trims and a purple slash down the front, flanked by jagged yellow stripes. The strangest thing about her was the skull of some horned animal she wore on her head, covering one of her eyes. She had her visible eye shut, and she was chanting words that rang with mystic power. At her feet was a bound and gagged Twin. Ferrin's heart leapt when he saw them move. They were alive. But not out of danger. Ferrin ducked back into cover and quickly considered his course of action. He decided to go with the simplest, and most practical. He took a deep breath, stepped out of hiding, brought his Gauntlet parallel to the ground...and fired. The magic bullet got within ten feet of the figure, then exploded in a brilliant burst of sparks. For a moment, the air lit up with a rippling glow; where once there was nothing, there was now a cylinder of light that faded quickly. Oh, hell. A magic barrier. So much for surprise. The figure neither flinched, nor misspoke as they avoided death by mere feet. The figure did stop it's chant, and turned to face Ferrin. "A sneak attack from the shadows? Not a very honorable way to start a fight." The figure said. "No but a great way to end them." Ferrin shot back, his mind racing. Unnoticed, the Twin stirred. Now that Ferrin had a better view, he definitely see that the figure was woman, though her figure was obscured, she had feminine figures, and long purple hair. He was also slightly shocked to see that her right arm was thin and white. Bone white. In fact it was literally skeletal. The sleeve ended at her shoulder, leaving the bone bare. Her eye was the next he noticed, it reflected the violet light with an eerie radiance. "Ferrin, I presume." The voice was calm and in control. How genteel. What the hell? I'll play along. "Yes, that name would be belong to me, but you have the advantage, for I do not know what name belongs to you." The woman's lips curled into a smile. "Yuura Kumori would be mine." She said. "I suppose I could explain my masterly crafted eeevil plan to you while gloating that you don't have a chance of success, but honestly, my Master is not so sure. He sees you as a potential inconvenience and has ordered me to use excessive force to eliminate you." "Little ol' me? An inconvenience? Gee, I'm flattered." Ferrin interjected. "Then consider it an honor for me to show you my power." She spread her arms wide, and Ferrin abruptly felt a great surge of power emanate from her. "Wizard of Magic, so full of Life. Surrender now in the face of strife. For this is the end of the path you have lead. Soon you shall join the ranks of the Dead." The ground of the cavern rumbled as cracks formed and widened. The air filled with the sound of shifting stone, grinding and fracturing. Skeletal hands shot up, some with cloth and flesh still attached, followed by heads, shoulders and legs. A horrible stench washed over Ferrin, the stench of rot and decay. He gagged slightly. Rows and rows of corpses in various stages of decay assembled before him, one looked centuries old, little more than mummified remans, another looked like it could still be saved by a snappy doctor. There were whole ones, ones missing limbs, ones dripping unidentifiable fluids, ones that bore wounds of battle. Most clutched weapons, traditional ones like swords, bows and axes, and improvised ones like bars and wood planks. About half wore armor that was as varied as they were. But every one of them had the same glowing purple eyes. Their ranks grew with every passing second, already, he couldn't even see Kumori and the Twin. Ferrin drew in a shuddering breath. "Quite the lively party here." This isn't good. I'm falling back on wisecracks. Every eye, dead and undead was focused on him. The assembled army was absolutely quiet. Then a ringing command broke the silence: "Kill Him." Oh shit. "Achoo!"
