To be honest, it definitely makes me cringe to read it. Though with more thought I can see where and why it'd be used. Race is still a big issue in the south so I can see you using it when and where it'd apply; realistically speaking.

So long opinion short: I'll probably always cringe at the word but I have no say against you using it as long as it's not excessive.
