Oh yeah.

After you kill the boar, right before you go into the church, head to the right across the bridge. There is a bonfire you can use that will make it easier to splat yourself against the boss, and a blacksmith who will upgrade your shit.

If you can run past the dragon, you can grab one of the best weapons in the game, (One of the dead guys on the bridge have it.)
