On the flip-side, executing this "mental castration" as Frojund put it was singled out quite clearly as the best and most merciful option in a sense due to it still leaving mithias alive, albeit much less potent due to a lack of invasive psionic abilities. While this could be seen as a method of showing that the volunteering party was the much more willing to think of the good of the whole, botching the procedure would likely leave the punished party in question comatose for a time at best and completely lobotomized at worst.
