[@Weird Tales] Superman doesn't need to counter strikes or try and outgun somebody in close quarters. He can take nearly everything anyone can dish out and then crack a planet in half with a backhand. No time for an intense hand to hand battle when every strike sends somebody flying half a city away or farther. 

The only people he'd use the martial arts on is other Kryptonians, Daxamites, Doomsday, or somebody with Godly power like Wonder Woman. 

[@Just The Wind] They need something when their solar energy reserves are tapped. Can't always depend on powers.
