At times it is wild, but the light construction of the longship makes it easy to put up onto the shore and move with logs toward calmer waters. One such stop was at the northern banks of the river but a few nights ago. Further down south, Yngvar could see huge trees and an even bigger forest off in the distance. It loomed so threateningly in the late evening horizon that Yngvar and his men hurried along to get going. Afterwards, the strange sensation was lifted and the travellers wondered what had gotten over them. They fear nothing, yet they had genuinely been unsettled by the great dark forest. Such thoughts would have to be kept for later however, for figures appeared in the distance of the early morning. "Yngvar! Look!" said one of the sailors, needlessly. Yngvar already saw. They were elves, clad in simple clothes probably worn by scouts. They had cloaks and occasioanlly staves or hunting bows. They looked upon the humans with patience and scepsism, until Yngvar and his companions stopped by the shore and hailed the elves. They seemed weary. The lands closest to the shore had been formed into a good base for the shipyard, and now only the actual construction was left. [Shipyard is fully complete next turn.] With most of the gilbin workforce at other projects, the pallisade would be a slower construction until more resources could be allocated to it's completion. Almost all miners now had a part-time guardduty, which meant they had to take rounds. A schedule was developed and all the would-be-guards were instructed shortly in their duties, and before long the mine was operating at full capacity with eagre guardsmen. He tested his ideas on his own house, and began with the windows. He used a sort of mortar to isolate the edges of the window, and then embedded measured planks along the rims to make a strong windowpane and frame. Lastly he put in the window itself, which was basicly a wooden hatch. He made sure the hatch was sealed when closed, and put some sort of cloth on the inside of the edges of the window and the hatch. Isolation complete, he thought. Ready for testing. Next, he did a similar procedure with the door itself, but couldn't isolate the edges with the cloth though since the door had to open and close more than the window-hatch. After a week, Rano thought he had his results: success! The temperature in his house was stable as before, but he thought that heat stayed for longer and escaped less, which was the entire point of the project! He and his fellow masons presented their results to Amari Asto and asked for more resources to start work on isolating all the settlements' houses. The amount of resources would be quite the amount, however. And the time it would take to change out all the windows and doors on -all- the buildings in the entire settlement..? However, difficult decisions are seldom this straight forward. A scout storms into the meeting. "My liege! The lizardmen - they've been spotted on the outskirts of the settlement! They're armed and coming for us! We think they seek to raid!" Indeed, a group of twenty lizardmen armed with spear or crude crossbows (or both) had been sighted heading towards the settlement with determination. They must have found the location days ago without the Antari noticing them! Amari Asto has little time to make a decision. A) Call to arms! Defend the settlement! B) Buy us time! Order the scouts and hunters to attempt to hold the lizardmen off until you can mount a resistance-force. C) Retreat! Attempt to stay clear of the lizardmen while they look for what they want and leave. Hopefully lives can be saved this way. D) Flee! We're doomed! Every man for himself! Around the riverlands were flat grasslands with rich earth and plenty of animals grazing. Dotted around the flat terrain were a few smaller forests that could sustain lumber operations. Further south on the southern side of the great river heading west, the lands became more rocky and hilly. To the north-east the scouts had already seen a great mountain-chain stretching for miles up northward, and of course the children of artemon knes of the great Dark Woods to the south-east where the giants lived on the outskirts and where Dark Elves (probably) dwelled deeper into the forests. The lands had plenty to offer in terms of agriculture, lumber and probably stone. If the elves sought after metals such as iron they'd have to look in the mountains to the north-east or the rocky hills of the south. Then again there was also the ruins of Cantivale, situated near the greatest mountain in the region (that they had seen) and located near a great lake and a river that flowed straight past Duinmelamar. For further details, the prospectors and scouts would have to search further. [Prospecting results next turn.] One of the soutingparties that headed east was resting on top of a small hill overlooking the river when they saw something in the distance. A boat. A ship unlike any they had ever seen, rowed and manned by humans dressed in tribal-looking attire and armed with axes, sword and shield. Many had long hair with braids and some had great beards, also sometimes with braids. For some reason, they didn't lay low. They knew their eyes could see farther than a human's and so they waited until the humans could see them. They stood upon the hill and waited, observing the humans. They manouvered their ship with agility and skill, and so the elves assumed they were hardened seafaring warriors. At least, from first impressions. When the humans had spotted them, the elves stood upon the hill still, waiting. The ship was pulled up onto the riverbanks and the humans could be seen debating shortly amongst themselves about what to do. The elves also were pondering how to approach these warriors. Despite their attire and getup, they did not seem hostile. Much. It just didn't feel right, dwarves with no gold. You could not resist it. Then again, you are Ironbeards and were once slaves, meaning your lust for gold is lesser than what the typical dwarf would feel. Next, the expedition from the northern mountain returns. They found that the path through the forests to actually get there were narrow, turbulent and unsafe, but the mountain has a free open stretch of grassland to the west all the way to the seashore. Seeing as the mountain was full of iron (at least at first glance), the expeditioners suggested that if a mining operation is set up there, they would need to transport the materials back to the settlement somehow other than through the forests. Perhaps by boat? The manpower required to do this though, would be high, and right now the Clan didn't have such. When the group of five dwarves arrived at the southern Ursar village by the smaller mountain, they were greeted as friends and realized that the mountain was already being mined by the Ursar. The dwarves told them of their business here, and the Ursar pondered the situation. Seeing as they had already claimed the mountain, and being a somewhat reclusive people, they wanted it for themselves. Seeing as the dwarves were friends of the Ursar at this point though, they suggested that the dwarves send a trade proposal to the main Ursar village and their leader, to see if the minerals of the mountain couldn't be obtained through trade and therefore collective growth. The mostly mined iron and small amounts of coal from here. Arngir spat out his morning drink when a "servant" (not actually a servant, seeing as oreborn society do not value social status that way) rushed in through the door. Expecting terrible news, Arngir stood up straight from his seat and demanded the reason for this interruption. To his surprise, the messenger's words were not "Oh it's terrible!" but rather the opposite. "Oh it's wonderful, Arngir!" started the messenger. Arngir blinked, confused. To everyone other than Vlath, it was but a flash of lightning in the sky. A black one, that ran across the sky like a crack in the earth, it's booming sound shattering the very air and parting the clouds above them. To everyone but Vlath, this was but an instant, the dark lightning had struck the corpse of the sacrificed lycan and turned the body and the glowing substance it had secreted into ash. The pelt he had layed on was also ash. Vlath fell to his knees. The short moment had been an eternity to him. The Gods had spoken to him. He could not remember all the words, they had been too powerful, but he knew that they had given him commands. He knew they demanded more blood, and had granted Vlath a taste of the reward that could be the entire covenant's. With demanding more blood, any sickly old Lycan wouldn't do. They wanted the blood of the lesser races, of advanced beings. Of humans, orcs and elves. Of ogre, of draconian, of dwarf and giant. Of any halfbreed. Of any being that was not Lycan - the gods demanded war, and plentiful of blood in sacrifice to them. Vlath could not remember why, but he was sure they had told him. Their words seemed distant now, even though he had heard them so clearly just a moment ago. When he rose from his knees, the other lycans around him gasped. Many knelt or bowed low before him, and asked of him what the Gods had willed of them, of what they had granted him. At first, Vlath had no idea what they meant, but then he felt it. A presence within his body. He looked at his hands, and then it became clear to him. All across his body ran scars, or perhaps they were more like tattoos... Either way, they were shifting with red and purple, and ran along his body like veins. Where the scars ran, his fur had parted to reveal them. All could see, it was as if the black lightningbolt had struck him and lived on inside him, despite it having actually struck the sacrificed lycan and turned him to ash. Before he could even grasp his new blessing or responsibilities, a sentry sounded the alarm. More sentries followed, and before long one of Bloodfang's warriors came running up to the ritual ground and shouted his news (after a short pause of awe at the sight of Vlath's new appearance). "An enemy force has been sighted west of here! Ogres, big white-skinned ogres with clubs and axes and... -armor-!" reported the warrior. The enemy was upon the covenant. Everyone looked to Vlath for directions. "How many?" demanded the Voidcaller. "A hundred, at least." said the warrior. No time to lose, Vlath. Everyone look to you for guidance and direction. Will you rally your warriors and fight the invading force, retreat elsewhere to regroup and reasses or will you flee and live on to fight another day? [b]A) Rally the warriors! We meet the enemy upon the fields of battle! B) Stall them! We need time to regroup and come up with a battle strategy. C) This is not the time... The swamps were hostile and the goblins knew it all too well, and they had just started to feel comfortable (or as comfortable as can be in a swamp where everything wants to kill you) in their new home. None the less, most agreed that it was probably for the best, and welcomed the safe flank of the mountains. It would mean one less direction where everything wanted to kill them from, after all. As Gredy sought out Trip and asked him how long it would take them to dig into the mountain, Trip was astonished. "You would allow us our own home within the mountains? You truly are a great friend!" Trip said, obviously misunderstanding what Gredy meant by 'digging in'. "It wouldn't take long, we are strong and diligent. We can dig tunnels and caves in a few days! With the right tools, of course... and we don't really have any of those. But we can make some! Right?" A few Goblin families volunteered to stay behind at the enclave's original location to act as it's keepers. All in all, 50 goblins stayed behind while the rest of the enclave moved south towards the mountains with all they owned (very little) on their backs. When Geist's exploration-party returned to the enclave, they found it quite... empty. They were directed south to the mountains, and just kinda shrugged and went "Huh." at the idea of moving the entire settlement closer to the mountains. With a kind of 'Why-not?' attitude, they set out to follow their kin south. This means they'll take a while longer to return to Gredy with their findings however. That's what the Talren dark elves would have to possess in order to turn this new home into a... Well, home. Many of Llyr's followers were desperate and came from a downtrodden societal situation, but just seeing the white shores and verdant nature of this new land, they already felt like they had reached salvation. With a bit of hard work, that is. Luckily, Dark Elves are actually known for their hard work and craftmanship compared to other elfkinds, (such as the spiritual and slow wood-elves and laid-back aristocrats of the high-elves) and as such their ambition might actually bear fruit here. Within a few months, the island was fully explored. Beautiful green forests of strong trees dotted the central and upper south of the island, while steep cliff and rock met bare water to the north. Mostly everywhere else, the island was bordered with fine white sand beaches, and down south on the southernmost tip, the ocean winds had smoothed the landscape into fine, flat grassland and rich dark soil. It was clear this island was a paradise, compared to where they had come from earlier, at least when it came to bare nature. The trees here however were... Different than they imagined. They didn't have a single strong trunk growing upwards, but rather it looked like every tree had four or more trunks grown together and upward in a spiral-motion kind of way. Some trees were so thick it looked like it was actually twenty trees grown together in one! But when a tree was felled, it became clear that they were not actually several in one, but naturally grew and looked this way. The lumber they gave were the strongest that Llyr had ever seen! As hard as metal, as flexible as rubber, and with the correct kind of craftsmanship could probably be made into the greatest of tools and ... perhaps weapons? Ships?! The craftsmen's' mouths watered at the thought, the posibilities... The small mountain to the north also held it's mysteries. Such as it's shape. It was shaped in such a way that it looked to be the tip of a mountain, but the less steep slopes and rocks that makes up the base of a regular mountain wasn't really there. Instead, it looked as if it just sprang out of the ground, making some fool or other speculate that it was actually an -underground- mountain with vast deposits and cavous systems beneath the surface, or that it had actually been a mountain but had somehow sank into the very ground, or sea. But such foolishness is surely simple talk... Right? The prospectors sent to investigate the mountain was shocked to find almost no minerals of worthy mention, but instead made the discovery of steep, very deep, very long natural caves and tunnels that seemed to lead downward into the mountain and into the ground. They speculated they'd find minerals further in, probably. As to what made the caves and tunnels, they have no idea, but they don't look artificial.
