For Abigail Walker, that meant shopping. It was a thoughtless and frivolous activity, and a good way to take her mind off of all of the gruesome and gory events that had transpired. Plus, Abby found that as a shifter she was constantly either losing or destroying clothes. “I'm not sure what made you think that you were welcome to show your face in here, but you aren't. Out with you, your kind is not welcome here.” Abigail was torn from her reverie as the cruel words currently being thrown towards her cut through the fog surrounding her thoughts. Surprised, she nearly jumped out of her skin, her hand clutching the gauzy fabric she had been admiring mere moments ago. “I don't understand,” she said, turning her blue eyed gaze onto the sales woman who had spoken so cruelly to her. The older women met Abigail's gaze levelly, her hand firmly planted on her hip. Even if Abigail didn't fight constant battles, she would have been able to tell when someone was itching for a confrontation. She sighed inwardly, knowing exactly how this was going to go, and mourning the life she had lived up until mere days ago. “I shop here all the time.” Matter of fact, the artfully distressed pale blue skinny jeans she was currently wearing came from this very shop. “No, you shopped here. Past tense. I don't welcome murderers into my store. Leave, or I will call the police.” Abigail nodded her understanding and quickly fled from the shop, blonde head tucked down low. She could feel eyes on her as she made her way not only out of the single store, but out of the Renaissance Shopping center entirely. It wasn't that long ago that she had made a public appearance at that very mall as Switcher, talking to some of the youth in Detroit as part of an anti-bullying campaign. Now she was being bullied into leaving that very spot. Unbelievable. Yet at the same time, very believable. This wasn't the first time Abigail had heard the word “murderer” used in relation to herself and the other members of the Coalition. Sure, they didn't actually kill the mayor, but they also didn't mange to stop the person to responsible. It seemed like the entire city of Detroit was taking it upon itself to play the role of judge, jury and executioner... and with each passing day, it seemed more and more likely that the Coalition would be found guilty in the court of public opinion. Feeling a twinge in her right knee, Abigail took a moment to stop and lean against a rail along the river walk. During the recent battle, the rival enhanced had landed a rather nasty and debilitating blow to Abigail's right leg. One would assume that having the ability to manipulate and control one's cells could fix any problem, but healing is taxing so Abigail had fixed the worst of it before promptly passing out. Of course she was treated in the med ward but the bit of pain in her knee remained, and Abigail allowed it to. She would heal this injury the slow way. The normal way. The human way. Sniffling, Abigail used the sleeve of her pale pink sweater to wipe the tears from her eyes. She cursed softly, not even realizing she had started to cry. “Are you alright sweetheart?” came a soft male voice from her left side. Again Abigail found herself startled. What a terrible habit this was becoming for someone who was supposedly a superhero. Abigail looked towards the voice, and found an older gentleman leaning against the rail just a few feet from her. Although he was clearly speaking to her, his gaze remained steadily on the water, a pair of sunglasses protecting his eyes from the afternoon sun. “I'm alright, thank you. Just a bad day.” Calling it a bad day was an understatement, but Abigail wasn't about to spill everything to the stranger. “A lot of bad days happening in this city lately, to a lot of good people like yourself. Gotta take the time to enjoy the good things. The sun is shining, the breeze is warm. Still plenty of daylight left to make today a good day. I'm going to make my day a good one by introducing myself to a pretty girl, that I'm sure I would have chased all around the city in my younger days. I'm Ted.” he said, reaching out his hand. Abigail smiled at the man's words, a laugh finally escaping her lips as she scooted closer to where he stood, body now turned in her direction. “I'm Abby.” she said, taking his hand. It was then that she noticed the cane in the man's other hand, and that although she was now right in front of him, he still seemed to not be looking at her. “Yes,” he said, seeming to sense her realization. “I'm blind.” Ted let go of her hand, and they both turned back in the direction of the water. “You're wondering how I knew you were a woman, and where you were standing, aren't you?” “I am...” Abby admitted, a touch of hesitance in her voice. “I could smell your perfume, it's light and floral. It mixes well with the slightly fruity scent of your shampoo. I could also hear the necklaces or bracelets that you are wearing. There are multiple and they jingle when the breeze blows. Plus, from the way your steps sound you are clearly wearing heels. Your skin was soft, and your hands are small. As for knowing you are beautiful, well, I don't. But you were upset and years marriage taught me that when a woman is upset, you tell her she is beautiful and good.” “It's almost like you are Enhanced with those senses of yours.” Abigail meant it as a joke, but cringed inwardly as soon as the words left her mouth. “No,” Ted said, becoming suddenly thoughtful. “It is true that my other senses did adapt when I lost my sight, but I'm not enhanced. And thank god for that. Those kids all have the weight of the world on their shoulders now. I don't envy them in the least. They have a long road ahead of them. Me? I get to enjoy the breeze. I hope that one day, they get to enjoy the breeze again, too.” Abigail smiled, realizing she may had found a new friend in Ted. The girl who could wear any face in the world only wanted to keep wearing her own without scrutiny. With him, in this moment, Abigail could do exactly that... and enjoy the breeze while she did it.
