I believe that incentive isn't much of an issue. There's plenty of room for whatever cause characters are dedicated to. Its not very different from a setting like Warhammer 40k, for example. The prospect may be grim, but you still need to fight because not only can you try to do what you believe in/want to, but also because even if victory is unlikely, of you give up, defeat is certain. In other words, you fight not to win, but to avoid losing, pretty much like any other War that had dragged for too long.
I mean, that runs into a fallacy of sorts because the fight here is 'Because I want the entire Nexus and not just my infinite portion of the Nexus.' In WH40K there are places where you don't have to ever see the front lines and you can basically live a normal life, propaganda of the xenophobic/fascist Imperium aside. Whereas in the Nexus you can't exactly tap out and go to recover somewhere where there is no influence from the War. And opposed to WH40K, the only existential threats that exist can actually b talked to, and don't pose an actual risk until all the sides sally forth to go meet in glorious combat. After all, Alt Signia was the only fight we've had where combat took place in a pre-controlled location. Its not like we've seen any place like Cadia yet.
