Your characters most definitely have an effect. In fact, it's practically the only thing that will cause the story to evolve/change. Without input from the characters, very little will occur.

If you're in doubt about your characters' ability to change the plot, however, feel free to propose ideas. Either in the OOC chat or via PM.
